Many of us are navigating constant stress in both our professional and personal lives. In times like these, showing ourselves kindness often feels like the last thing on the list.
But here’s the truth: self-love and compassion aren’t luxuries—they’re survival skills.
What Does Self-Love Really Mean?
Brené Brown says it beautifully:
“Practicing self-love means learning how to trust ourselves, to treat ourselves with respect and to be kind and affectionate to ourselves.”
Self-love isn’t about being selfish or ignoring others. It’s about creating a foundation of care for ourselves so we can show up fully for the people and responsibilities that matter most.
Dr Kristin Neff - Psychologist, Author and pioneer researcher in the field of self compassion believes that self compassion has 3 main ingredients;
The difference between self-compassion and self-pity is that sense of interconnectedness - where we understand that what is happening to us happens to others, this is part of being human.
Sharing compassion with others shows up by understanding what they are going through, being with them rather than reacting in a way that makes them feel they are the only ones in the world who could be going through such an challenging time.
